RCO 2025 participant checklist / final information
In case of an emergency, contact emergency services first (phone 112). Having done so, contact the RCO group (e.g. via the WhatsApp group) to see if others nearby can assist, if relevant. Valeria will be carrying an AED (defibrillator) on her bicycle. As with any group of friends out for a run, everyone is responsible for their own safety, but let's also look after each other out there :-)
Please remember, this is a self-supported event (unless you have arranged support for yourself, which is fine). Think carefully about the fuel / water you need for your intended distance and plan accordingly. Some useful points along the route where you can access shops, etc. are shown on our online map, but these become sparser as we move further west.
Four useful water stops:
Belvedere Hotel (17.6 km)
RCO water station at Hill of Down (76.8 km) 13:40-15:15 only
Public water tap on quayside at Nanny Quinn's Bar (85.5 km)
RCO water station at Mary Lynch's (90.8 km) 15:10-16:45 only
Make sure you are familiar with the route, available at https://tedz.eu/uploads/RCOmap.html This is a useful resource that also lists shops, toilets and Joycean points of interest on the route.
If you plan to join the main group of 100k runners on the route, please refer to the itinerary https://royalcanalodyssey.ie/arrival-times/ and especially to the live tracker which will be linked from the same page once the run is underway. We intend not to get ahead of the planned schedule, but of course we can't guarantee not to fall behind it, so please keep an eye on the live tracker.
If you're joining us at the start, we plan to take a group photo at the Joyce Tower Museum (Sandycove) at 5:50am, before departing at 6:00am sharp.
The weather forecast predicts quite a bit of rain over the course of the day, so please dress / plan accordingly. If relevant, plan to have a dry change of clothes for your finish point.
If the weather really gets the better of you on the day, don't be afraid to adapt your route (e.g. run a shorter out-and-back rather than A-to-B with public transport home). RCO is a casual event - do it whatever way suits you on the day.
For those who are booked to attend tomorrow's dinner in Mullingar, the cost is €39.95 for the three course meal. The gratuity is not included in this price. Drinks are also not included in this price. Payment will be by everyone individually (direct to the hotel) at the end of the meal. Drinks will be paid separately.
Last but not least, enjoy it! We hope this will be a great opportunity for anyone to to run / cycle / walk amongst friends, taking in the unique connection between Joyce, Ulysses, Dublin, Mullingar and the beautiful setting of the Royal Canal!
